W3: why do you think people use wikipedia ? Why do others write for it ?

The fact is wikipedia is one of the most famous website in western countries. Usuallywhen one search on the search engine for a word a fact or a date wikipedia is one of the first website to show up. This shows how famous and useful it is despite the website being more than fifteen years old.

So this is basically showing the popularity of wikipedia now as for why we first have to consider the caracteristics of wikipedia : it is translated in more than 290 langages, more than 5 millions articles have been translated in english, and its articles cover every subject/ topic possible. So the fact that so many articles are translated and created allows the knowledge to spread accross countries thus boosting its popularity.

But if so many article are being vreated or have been created, we should ask ourselves by who and why ? As time passes, things evolve or are created, new knowledge are being discovered everyday. To write in wikipedia one has to have the will to share this knowledge, translate it and spread it for it benefit to everyone. Some of the people that contribute to wikipedia are expert in their own field, but some are student like us, or workers or retired. To write in wikipedia you have to believe and be driven by the belief of « together is better », if we do it all together we can make the best encyclopedia.

W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? Yun-Jin Kim

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.
