W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? / posted by Sojeong Yeon
What is the reason people use Wikipedia? Even if they write in Wikipedia, they are not paid for. Then how are they "passionate" about writing, commenting, debating in Wikipedia and "devoting" to Wikipedia? This is what I was curious about last time.
First, many people use Wikipedia because its content is professional and credible although Wikipedia is an encyclopedia made voluntarily by many people. Because it is based on objective and official source, it is reliable. Second, we can get information which is edited in real time. Unlike paper encyclopedia, Wikipedia which is an online encyclopedia provides the article and information reflecting the changing times and containing the accumulated history.
Then, why are people so inclined to edit the Wikipedia article passionately and try to become more enthusiastic 'Wikipedian'? There are a number of opportunities for them to use Wikipedia for the first time and to actually make edits. Whether they start Wikipedia for any reason, the reason why they continue to write and edit an article could be related to "self-gratification" or "immaterial profit". They do not receive the monetary compensation for editing, but I think it is because they are beneficial to them in various ways so they become passionate.
Some people write articles to make it their own 'career' and sometimes they write articles about areas they are interested in as hobbies. Wikipedia also helps that they enhance their professionalism and knowledge by writing articles about what they knows well. Of course, there is reason to help another people because they get some helps from other people. But, I think, the more people feel strongly that it gives them satisfaction and efficacy, the more often they use Wikipedia, While the less they feel, the less likely they are to participate in Wikipedia.
Finally, Koreans use Wikipedia less than other developed countries. What are some ways to encourage Koreans to be more interested in and actively use Wikipedia? It would also be a good idea to have classes or discussions using media such as Wikipedia in class. I would like to hear the opinions of other friends.
