W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? - ChaeHyeon Lee
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia of user participation that anyone can write freely. It is an encyclopedia that anyone freely writes, edits, revises and complements freely, unlike an encyclopedia that is written and edited by experts and encyclopedia editors. I think that this is the most representative answer to why people use Wikipedia.
There are numerous encyclopedias online. The reason why people use Wikipedia among many encyclopedias is because I think Wikipedia has a charm that only Wikipedia has, unlike other encyclopedia. So I think the charm is that anyone can freely modify and edit it. People tend to take the information in the encyclopedia manually. However, Wikipedia makes it possible to actively discuss rather than accept unconditional acceptance. If you know more information about a particular piece of content on Wikipedia than existing article, you can make it richer by modifying and editing it. I think this is the reason why many people write in Wikipedia. People share the knowledge they know through Wikipedia and gain new knowledge. As a result, the information on Wikipedia becomes richer. Wikipedia can be categorized as a co-creation type when divided by the type of collective intelligence. The co-creation type is when collaborating through a network for a common goal. People who use Wikipedia seem to be inclined to participate in sharing knowledge and information through Wikipeida, making them feel inclined to participate in sharing more information and knowledge. So, I think we participate in Wikipedia’s knowledge and information sharing activities.
Because Wikipedia's space is open and free to everyone, there are strict principles for the content of Wikipedia. This is the reason why people who do not make modifications use Wikipedia. Depending on the Wikipedia system, several people may have modified the article. However, even though the article was modified by various people, the article is still reliable. Wikipedia articles should be written in a neutral position. Non-neutral articles can be deleted without notification to the author. The work of Wikipedia must also be written by a reliable source. So I think people who do not make modifications use Wikipedia too because they are reliable.
Wikipedia may be used for as many reasons as many people use. I wrote the most typical reason among many reasons. I hope that the time will come when many people share their knowledge actively in Korean Wikipedia. Wikipedia in Korea is not as good as Wikipedia in English, and Koreans prefer the encyclopedia written by experts to the encyclopedia that uses collective intelligence. I would like to discuss how to activate Korean Wikipedia further.
