W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them.

1. Summary

I participated in Wikipedia for the first time through this class.
During this semester I set my goal to edit and write documents that I like, know well, and find information.
Of course, I will cover items about Korea and society as much as possible.
First, I thought about what I like and know well and what I can find well.
I love music and watching sports.
And I know well about the city where I live.
Also, it seemed to be able to find good things about my school, my events and famous people in Korea.
In the case of celebrities, I thought it was easier to deal with celebrities in the music and sports worlds that I was interested in.
I decided on a big topic, so I became clear what to do.

2. Interesting point

For the first time, I edited a document about Yesan county that I had spent my childhood.
I first read the document and edited the celebrities from Yesan county that I knew, not mentioned in the document.
The person I wrote is a very famous businessman called Baek Jong - won.
Although Baek Jong-won is a famous person who was mentioned in various broadcasts that he was from Yesan,
I was a bit embarrassed because he was not in the document.

Next, I edited the streaming service in Korea for the music field I was interested in.
It called Melon. Among their business, the ticket reservation business was a lot of publicity and sales, and there was no trace in the document.
I felt this lack of detailed information.

Then I edited the 2018 Winter Olympics, Korea's most recent big event.
In the Olympics, Korean women's curling team became popular.
Among them Kim Young-mi was the most talked player.
This is because the team was composed mainly of Kim Young-Mi.
This was a very hot issue in Korea.
But the English Wikipedia document only records her basic information.
I wanted to give information to foreigners who wanted to know about her.
I could see that Koreans' participation in English Wikipedia was low.

3.Discussion point

Why Koreans do not participate in the English Wikipedia document about Korea?

I think writing an English Wikipedia about Korea helps foreigners who live in Korea understand Korea.
This will have a positive impact on living together.

Comments

  1. Indeed, I think that develop articles in English about Korea is helpful for foreigners. As I am a foreign student, it is always good to have some explanations about the Korean culture (really different than the European one) and the places to be, and not only touristic places. That's why I appreciate to read some detailed articles about Korea in English. - Solène Huille.
